Airsoft Safety Basics

Airsoft is a very safe sport — as long as protective gear and rules are respected. Put differently, almost every accident traces back to a broken basic rule. Here is what every beginner must know.

1. Eye protection is non-negotiable

Even a 1 J BB can cause permanent eye damage. Always wear impact-rated goggles or a full-face mask (look for ANSI Z87.1 or EPSC ratings). Regular glasses or sunglasses can shatter and make injuries worse. Never remove eye protection inside the field — not even to wipe fog. A lower-face mask is strongly recommended to protect your teeth.

2. Respect energy limits

Most fields set joule limits per role (typically ~1.14–1.5 J for rifles, ~2.3 J for bolt-action snipers) and chrono every gun at the gate. Check your setup with the ballistics calculator before game day. Remember that switching to heavier BBs does not change your energy — see the FPS and joules guide.

3. The four rules of gun handling

  1. Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
  2. Never point the muzzle at anything you don't intend to shoot (muzzle down in safe zones).
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
  4. Know what is beyond your target.

Outside the field (parking lots, public transport), keep replicas in a bag, magazine out and chamber clear. Public display of replicas can be a legal matter in most countries.

4. Engagements and field etiquette

5. Equipment safety

Once safety becomes second nature, airsoft is pure fun. Curious how your setup performs? Run it through the ballistics calculator.
